 SHIVA TEMPLES IN CHENNAI (all vippu sthalams – appar & mankavasakar)

1.       Arthanareeswarar temple  near Egmore Dasaprakash
Sivan ezhuntharuliyiruppathaal ezhumur  ena Appar  kuripitta thalam. Ezhumur  became
Egmore.
Very old temple before  17th century has been destroyed and now a small temple with
Arthanaareewswarar  also known as Saptha Risheeswarar. Prayed by Saptharishis
Vanmiki,Bringi,Baradwajar,vasishtar,Agasthiar ,Durvasar .all the Rishis had  prayed to
Temples around Chennai at various times at various places. They had ashrams around Chennai
Also.
Lakshminarayanar with Mahalakshmi is  also present in this temple.

 2.    Thiruvatteswaran pettai near Triplicane High Road- Big Temple older than 600 years.Beacuse
         Of invasion by other relegions in this area, proof & history of the temple is not available.
         Vittoba Swamigal known as Dhodha swamigal migrated to or from this area. Maratha scripts
         Are here. Uzhavaarapani & Prayers by Sivanadiyars group are being done regularly. Pradisham
         Also very popular here.

3      Thirunindravoor Hirudhayaaleeswarar Koil
        The Temple built by Poosalaar naayanaar in his Heart  day by day as per actual procedures.
         When Lord Shiva asked King to alter date for his temples construction since Shiva is going to
         Attend on the same day another Kumbabishekam – The Local King  surprised and enquired
         About the adiyaar for whom the Shiva appeared before the King in Dream. When King knew the
         Story of Poosalaar he offered to construct the temple as wished by Poosalar in his heart. The
        Karpagraha is in the shape of heart and this temple is for solving Heart problems.

4.     Nandivaram near Kuduvaanjeri – Nandheeswarar Koil
        On Trichy National High way after  Guduvancheri . Nandheeswarar sametha Soundarnayaki
        Very Big Temple by Pallava Regime older than 1000 years.
        After obtaining Amutham Devas  were in  very  joyous mood  forgetting Lord Siva. To remind His
        Presence Shiva danced on Nadhi.  Big Vigrahas of  Lord Shiva.
        Pradosha  vashipaadu is very popular here.

5.     Thirupalaivanam Thirupaaleeswarar koil Near Ponneri – very Old Temple  
              Thirupalaivanam: Siva temple built by Rajendra chola.


           The place Ponneri is about 33 kms from Chennai, and from there10 kms NE is                
           Thirupalaivanam.  Main Deity is Thirupaleeswarar and his consort known as Lokambikai amman in         
           different sanctum. Sthala Vruksham is Palai. Teertham is Amirtha pushkarani.

            Sthala puranam: When parkadal was churned nector came up and it was taken by devas                   
            for themselves. Anything that we have should be offered to God, so they made a linga from
            the nector, and they worshipped here.
             Importance: The Amirta linga here is worshipped with milk, rose water, curd and coconut    
             water.
           The Linga murthy is in white colour symbol of purity, nectar – blessing mryutnjayam -  eternality
           Big Temple.Tank. Asuras came in the form of  Frog to take nectar from the Tank Shiva gave saabam
           To Frog and Frog became standstill.  Even now Frogs can not be found  in this tank.
            Very old temples of olden yugas and rebuilt by  Rajendra  chola period.
          Chinnakaavanam Angola vinayakar koil – 2 km from thiruppaalaivanam
              Vinayagar temple older than 2500 years
             Main Deity is Chatur Veda parameeswarar / Nootreteeswarar and his consort known as       
               Ashtothravalli Amman. Sthala Vruksham is Angola Vruksham.Teertham is Arani river.

Purana says Agyastar worshiped Siva here. He made 107 siva lingas and at that time he remembered that he forgot to worship lord Ganesha. All 107 lingas together formed as Ganesha under the sthala vruksham. The Ganesha is Swayambu and there is no trunk for him. 108 linga which Agastyar made is known as Nootreteeswarar and that is the one we worship in the temple.

Some fruits of the sthala vruksham ie; Angola maram falling through  sticks back to the tree again. Specaility of the sthala vriksham.
